DANCE CURRICULUM
2009-2010

ACROBATICS

Intro to Acro: learning how to support the body in safe weight bearing ways. Tumble, jump, leap, and roll through this energetic class.

Ballet for Babes: (3-5 years old) an introduction to movement using basic ballet principles and positions, this class focuses on the development of balance, coordination, and confidence in early minds.

Basic Ballet: the foundation for a structured ballet classes begins here. This introductory class to ballet familiarizes the student with classical terminology, positions, and basic technique.

Intermediate Ballet: introduces connections between mind and movement. A greater expansion of presentation and technique in relation to controlled movement.

Advanced Ballet: a concentrated study of muscle control and physical discipline in its application to the art of ballet. An accelerated class taught to strengthen attentiveness and evoke a sense of controlled focus.**Students at this level may wear pointe shoes at the discretion of the teacher.

Intro to Pointe: a strengthening class focusing on preparing the body for pointe work. Focusing on ankles and feet strength in preparation for toe work. Pointe exercises and skills will be the focus of this class. **Students must be enrolled in the Advanced or Adult level Ballet.

 Adult Ballet: focusing on all the principles of a ballet class, adult ballet allows for students of various levels of experience to strengthen their knowledge and confidence in ballet technique and performance. **Students at this level may wear pointe shoes at the discretion of the teacher.

DANCE BASICS

Dance Basic 1: a general introduction enlisting 4 styles of technique to allow the beginning student to experience various styles of dance. Combinations classes are taught with 30 minutes devoted to each style. Ballet and Tap, or Jazz and Acrobatics.

JAZZ

Basic Jazz: an exploration of the fundamentals of jazz including rhythm, coordination, and isolations within the body. Awareness of the music and timing as it relates to various jazz styles.

Int/Adv Jazz: integrating technical dance skills and performance qualities into the realm of jazz at an intermediate/advanced level. Developing stamina, endurance, and memory to get through a high-energy jazz routine.

Intro to Hip Hop: learning the basic techniques and movements that are essential to this ever-changing form. Including improvisation, body isolations, and working through all levels of space with high energy.

MODERN

Basic Modern: develops strength, stretch, and increases range of mobility. Primary focus on musicality, dynamics, clarity and articulation in time and space. Introduction to weight-bearing practices using all surfaces of the body.

Int/Adv Modern: a more advanced approach in training, practice and performance from an anatomically correct standpoint. Empowering the person/dancer/thinker/ choreographer in each student. An in depth investigation of the world of modern dance from many perspectives. Working right-side-up and upside down with intense physicality.

TAP

Int. Tap (All ages) learning the basic steps and principles of tap exercises through rhythm, coordination, and patterns of the feet.
